The Separation of Different Cell Classes from Lymphoid Organs
1. Mammalian erythrocytes swell as the pH of the isotonic suspending medium is lowered, as a direct consequence of the specialized permeability properties of the erythrocyte membrane. Lymphocytes and granulocytes from a variety of sources did not exhibit this property. 2. The behaviour of mouse bone marrow erythroid cells at various stages of differentiation was studied by using a change in buo...
متن کاملTHE SEPARATION OF DIFFERENT CELL CLASSES FROM LYMPHOID ORGANS IV. The Separation of Lymphocytes from Phagocytes on Glass Bead Columns, and Its Effect on Subpopulations of Lymphocytes and Antibody-Forming Cells
Four separate effects can be demonstrated when lymphoid cell suspensions are passed through columns of siliconed glass beads . (a) A temperature-dependent "active adherence" of phagocytic cells, such as macrophages and polymorphs . (b) A temperature-independent and selective trapping by "physical adherence" of particular classes of lymphoid cells, including certain antibody-forming cells. (c) A...
متن کاملThe extent of clonal structure in different lymphoid organs
To gain insight into the clonal organization of lymphoid organs, we studied the distribution in situ of donor-derived cells in near-physiological chimeras. We introduced RT7b fetal liver cells into nonirradiated congenic RT7a neonatal rats. The chimerism 6-20 wk after injection ranged from 0.3 to 20%. The numbers of cell clones simultaneously contributing to cell generation in a particular hist...
متن کاملLymphoid Neogenesis and Tertiary Lymphoid Organs in Transplanted Organs
The progressive organization of immune effectors into functional ectopic lymphoid structures, named tertiary lymphoid organs (TLO), has been observed in many conditions in which target antigens fail to be eliminated by the immune system. Not surprisingly, TLO have been recurrently identified in chronically rejected allografts. Although significant progress has been made over the last decades in...
متن کاملShortman K. The separation of different cell classes from lymphoid organs. II. The purification and analysis of lymphocyte populations by equilibrium density gradient centrifugation. Aust. J. Exp. Biol. Med. Sci. 46:375-96, 1968
Lymphocytes were separated according to their buoyant density, by centrifugation to equilibrium in continuous gradients of albumin. The procedure gave good resolution, high reproducibility, and good recovery of biologically active cells. Lymphocytes were separable into a series of discrete density subpopulations. [The SCI indicates that this paper has been cited over 185 times since 1968.]
